The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is the Spanish body in charge of ensuring that you have the skills and knowledge to drive safely. To demonstrate this they require that all drivers take a series of tests and exams which are designed to be difficult. In addition you are required to have a medical test and to pass this before moving on to the theory and practical driving exams. Go here: driving-school-barcelona.com
Practice Tests for the DGT Test in English
Fortunately, for expats who are not native speakers of Spanish, the DGT have a solution – a version of their theory exam that can be taken in English. The DGT website has a link which will take you to a page where you can take a free preparation exam in English (you have to click on “sin certificado”, meaning without certificate). The questions are similar to those found on the actual exam and there is no time limit on the test.
Once you have passed the practice exam, your driving school will inform DGT that you are ready to move on to the theory test and they will arrange for the appointment in one of their own centres. It will cost a set amount which covers the DGT admin fee and a little bit extra on top for the driving school. You will get three “chances” at each of the theory and practical tests combined before you have to pay again for another three.
To do the practical test, you will be asked to bring your driver’s licence from your home country and some other documentation. The administration should be able to advise you on the exact list of documents that will be required.
